From Stage to Ecosystem — Kunwer Sachdev’s Solar & Entrepreneurship Playbook (2014–15)
How a series of national stages — from rooftop solar conclaves and TiE mentorship rounds to the Institute of Directors — shaped a cohesive blueprint for engineering disruption, hardware scaling, and corporate governance.
Historical disclosure: Kunwer Sachdev ceased all association with Su-Kam Power Systems Ltd. in April 2018. Historical event images and references are preserved solely for archival record — not as current affiliation.
Between late 2014 and mid-2015, the Indian clean-tech and entrepreneurship calendar filled with summits that wanted operators on stage — not only policy slides. Kunwer Sachdev used those rooms the same way he used the factory floor: to pressure-test ideas in public, recruit talent and partners, and leave founders with a sharper mental model of how hardware actually scales in India.

1. The Art of the Stage: Grabbing the Room in 60 Seconds
Keynotes and industry panels are rarely won with spreadsheets or scripted slide decks. In the technology sector, public addresses serve as real-time market education. As reflected in The Art of the Keynote: Watch Your Words (Livemint 2011), an audience decides within the first sixty seconds whether you are presenting genuine field insight or reciting institutional corporate rhetoric.
By 2014, that philosophy had evolved into an active ecosystem tool. Speaking invitations were no longer just opportunities to talk about power inverters; they became open masterclasses on decentralizing the Indian electrical grid, overcoming hardware manufacturing bottlenecks, and structuring high-growth technology companies.

2. Decentralizing Power: CMO League & The Rooftop Solar Conclave
During the 2014 CMO League (5 September, The Leela) and the 2nd Annual Conference on Rooftop Solar in India (18 March 2015, The Leela Palace), India stood at the precipice of a clean-energy shift. While much commercial discourse centered on megawatt utility installations, the democratizing opportunity lay overhead: distributed urban and rural rooftops.
Addressing marketing leaders and technical engineers alike, Kunwer framed solar not as an esoteric green commodity, but as essential decentralized infrastructure. Scaling rooftop solar required demystifying technical architecture — transitioning power conversion from complex, industrial-only hardware to setups that could deliver verifiable ROI in Indian homes and businesses.

3. Fostering Grassroots Hardware: TiE Chai & IIT Delhi Accelerator
While software ventures proliferated across India’s venture ecosystem, hardware founders faced a steeper climb: prototype fabrication, working capital cycles, testing certifications, and supply chain friction. Long before large-scale keynotes at TiEcon Ahmedabad or early panels at the NIMHANS Bangalore startup forums, mentoring emerging builders was grounded in tactical problem-solving.
Through open interactions at TiE Chai (18 October 2014, The Taj Palace), the SME Conclave (TiE Delhi, February 2015), and the Startup Accelerator at IIT Delhi (24 July 2015), the focus shifted from pitch valuations to shop-floor realities:
- Cash flow over burn rate: Hardware startups cannot sustain endless design sprints without early distribution channels.
- In-house testing rigor: Surviving harsh Indian environmental variances requires engineering resilience, not off-the-shelf imports.
- Distribution parity: Outstanding R&D is meaningless without an entrenched dealer and service network.

4. Board Leadership & Culture: The IOD National Convention
Technological disruption can build market momentum, but sustained longevity demands institutional governance. On Saturday, 20 December 2014, at the Institute of Directors (IOD) One Day National Convention on Corporate Governance & Sustainability — held with the IOD Annual Meet at The Ashok Hotel, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi (presenting sponsor: YES Bank / YES Institute) — Kunwer addressed enterprise leadership.
Speaking during Plenary II (11:45–13:15) on “Empowering the board: Board leadership and culture” alongside leaders from Schneider Electric, Viom Networks, ICSI, and National Fertilizers, the session tackled a critical transition: transforming founder-led operational instinct into an empowered, forward-looking board structure. The printed agenda listed him as Kunwer Sachdev, Managing Director, Su-Kam — the historical affiliation that matches the stage photo and the disclosure above.
For high-growth engineering ventures, a board must move beyond compliance checklists. It needs to cultivate an engineering culture capable of committing to decades-long R&D bets without compromising statutory accountability. That governance thread ties to later corporate addresses, including the KOHLER India Executive Innovation Workshop and keynotes on industry resilience at ET EnergyWorld.

18-12-2014; the printed schedule is the authority — 20 December 2014.)That thread ties the Founder Series together. MPPT, BMS, Solar PCU, gel process lines — none of those programmes survive without a culture that tolerates expensive truth. Stages in 2014–15 were one way to broadcast that culture beyond the factory.
