APJ Abdul Kalam Inaugurates Su-Kam’s Solar Micro-Grid — A Milestone for Rural India

Former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, inaugurated a Rs 6 crore mini solar power plant in Kannauj — the constituency of Dimple Yadav. The 250 KW solar micro-grid, commissioned by Su-Kam Power Systems, was designed to bring reliable, clean energy to rural households that had long suffered from erratic grid supply.

Why This Mattered

At the time, much of rural Uttar Pradesh faced chronic power shortages. Villages in Kannauj received only 4-6 hours of electricity per day. Su-Kam’s solar micro-grid changed that, providing round-the-clock power to over 450 households and lighting up 60 streets with LED fixtures.

The project demonstrated what Kunwer Sachdev and his team at Su-Kam had long believed: decentralized solar energy was the fastest path to rural electrification in India.

“Solar energy is the future of India’s villages. What Su-Kam has done here in Kannauj should be replicated across the country.”
