When SiliconIndia set out to profile Kunwer Sachdev, it reached for a title that has followed him for years: “The Solar Man of India.” It is a fitting label for the founder of Su-Kam Power Systems — a man the publication counts among this generation’s most notable innovators, marketers, motivational speakers and visionary entrepreneurs. But the title only makes sense once you understand how far he travelled to earn it.

From selling pens to the sales floor

Sachdev’s entrepreneurial education did not begin in a boardroom. His early experience was strikingly varied — from selling pens and stationery to working in a sales department — and it left him with a conviction he still repeats today: that the single most valuable skill in business is the ability to sell. That instinct for understanding customers, more than any technical pedigree, would become the foundation of everything he built. Trained in mathematical statistics and law rather than engineering, he approached the power industry as an outsider who could see what insiders had stopped questioning.

Reimagining the Indian inverter market

In the late 1990s, India’s inverter market was chaotic and low-trust, dominated by unbranded, unreliable products assembled by local players. Where others saw a crowded, unglamorous trade, Sachdev saw an industry waiting to be professionalised. He founded Su-Kam and set about doing exactly that — treating the humble inverter as a serious consumer product worthy of research, design and a trusted brand name. In doing so he turned “Su-Kam” into a household word and helped make the Indian inverter something families could actually rely on.

An innovator as much as a marketer

What set Su-Kam apart was a genuine commitment to engineering. Under Sachdev’s leadership the company built one of the strongest research-and-development records in its sector — filing more than a hundred patents for power-backup technology and design, among the highest for any Indian company, and launching the world’s first plastic-body inverter, a product recognised as an “Innovation of the Decade.” Those firsts carried the brand well beyond India’s borders, into the Middle East, Africa and South Asian markets, until Su-Kam’s products were reaching dozens of countries.

Why “The Solar Man of India”

The title SiliconIndia uses points to the second act of Sachdev’s career. Long before rooftop solar became fashionable, he was arguing that the future of Indian power lay in clean, distributed generation — and he pushed Su-Kam, and later his new venture Su-vastika, toward solar and sustainable energy-storage solutions for both off-grid and on-grid customers. His pitch has stayed consistent: solar is not just an environmental choice but a practical answer to a country that still struggles with reliable power.

A story that keeps inspiring

It is that arc — from selling pens on the street to being profiled as one of the country’s foremost energy entrepreneurs — that makes Sachdev a fixture of India’s success-story journalism. SiliconIndia’s profile is less about a single company than about a mindset: relentless salesmanship, a willingness to professionalise what others ignore, and the conviction that innovation and self-belief can carry a person from nothing to national recognition.
