When Kunwer Sachdev’s Su-Kam Power Systems stopped being just a household inverter brand and started supplying India’s institutions and armed forces, the demand profile changed. These buyers care whether the system works in a Rajasthan border desert, an Air Force station in Punjab, a PSU rooftop in Faridabad, or an engineering college in Kerala.

Armed forces — solar on the frontier

The most demanding customer Su-Kam ever took on was the Border Security Force. Diesel had been the default at forward outposts along the Indo-Pak border. Su-Kam engineered a Solar PCU-based system that ran continuously in extreme temperatures and dust storms, with Sachdev personally supervising the border installations.

1 MWp for the Indian Air Force — Bhathinda / Bhisiana

Energetica India (October 2017) documented Su-Kam’s technical role in commissioning a 1.0 MWp solar power plant at the Bhisiana Air Force station, Bhathinda. Executed by Frigo Pvt Ltd for the Military Engineering Services (MES), Su-Kam brought the design and integration expertise for the plant — a milestone in solar deployment for the Indian Air Force’s Punjab base. Energetica’s follow-up (24 October 2017) added the wider context: Su-Kam had earlier installed 1.3 MW of solar off-grid power at various north-eastern locations for the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army, and the Bhathinda plant was the first utility-scale project taken up by MES, sitting under MES’s wider plan of putting up 150 MWp of solar across Army, Navy and Air Force stations.

Rs 300 crore green-energy foray — Business Standard (2013)

Business Standard (Piyali Mandal, 14 January 2013) broke the story that Su-Kam was ready to invest Rs 300 crore to acquire companies in the solar sector and expand its existing operations. It is the piece that formally announced the transition from ‘inverter maker’ to ‘green-energy player’ — the institutional foundation everything else on this page rests on.

North East India — the Tripura / Agartala first

Energetica India reported Su-Kam was rapidly expanding its solar presence in North East India — commissioned by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) to install, commission and maintain the state’s first solar project in Agartala, at the Ujjayanta Market Complex. Inaugurated by Smt. Bijita Nath (Minister for Science, Technology & Environment, Tripura), Sri Prafullajit Sinha (Chairperson, Agartala Municipal Council) and Ashish Sethi (AVP-Solar Business, Su-Kam) as part of the Agartala Solar City Programme.

Engineering colleges — a 1 MW plant at PEC

Su-Kam’s biggest institutional-education win was a 1 MW solar plant at Punjab Engineering College — one of the largest campus rooftop deployments of its era.

NHPC Faridabad, SBI Academy Haryana, and Navratna PSU Engineers India Limited (90 kW on-grid) — central-bank training, hydropower administration, and a national engineering PSU, all in the same customer list.

SME Post — transforming a million lives

SME Post’s Su-Kam success-story feature frames the same institutional footprint in a different lens: how the company’s solar rollouts across armed forces posts, PSUs, schools and villages have collectively touched millions of Indian lives.

Haryana state — IFFCO and ITM University, Gurgaon

Energetica India (Moulin, 21 August 2015) reported Su-Kam’s state-wide push in Haryana — cutting-edge solar solutions in line with the state government’s initiative to encourage residents to switch to solar. Two flagship installations from that programme: a 150 KWp grid-tie solar plant for IFFCO and a 150 KWp solar plant for ITM University, Gurgaon, alongside a wider aim of solarising Gurgaon and the state (including a 100 KWp state-facility deployment). Cooperative-sector infrastructure and a private university, both on the same channel.

Tata Power (TDPPL) tie-up — solar for a private utility’s customer base

The Hindu Business Line (22 November 2017) reported the MoU between Su-Kam and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TDPPL) — under which TDPPL subscribers and employees could avail exclusive discounts on Su-Kam’s solar PV modules, rooftop solar systems and power back-up solutions. It is the moment a private-sector utility formally chose Su-Kam as its channel-partner of choice for solar — and gave the brand direct access to a utility’s installed customer base.

Institutional trust — NISE’s factory visit

The clearest signal of institutional credibility came when the National Institute of Solar Energy (MNRE’s technical arm) visited the Su-Kam factory and R&D lab.
